The Old Big Oak Flat Road was one one of the first two roads into the Yosemite Valley, starting from Big Oak Flat, along part of the Tioga Road, then to Tamarack Flat (where the road now ends) and on down into the Yosemite Valley. The road was noted for the superb views of the valley, but was finally closed by rock slides in 1942 shortly after the new (and present) Old Oax Flat road was opened. The old road is still walkable, with a bit of a scramble over the rockslides at the zig-zag, and a superb way to finish a high level walk and return to the valley. You can follow the old telegraph wires still visible amongst the tumbled rocks to locate the the trail again. The Rainbow View lookout point is still recognizable, with views of Sentinel Dome, Cathedral, Bridal Veil Falls and El Capitan.
