Yosemite National Park - Photo Album of views on the high trails

Slideshow

This is a first attempt to get some of my photos of the Yosemite on the web. There is no attempt at ordering at present, but there is desciption, and the photos are illustrative of you will see on the walks described below.

Jacqui and I spent a lot of time in the Sierra Nevada of California during the period 1990-1995, and these photos are based on four of my favorite walks in the Yosemite National Park, that I did many times in that period. They were taken at various (forgotten) dates and times, on normal silver film with an Olympus OM-4. I did not record any details at the time, and these prints have been selected out of old archives, digitized and dates and times estimated from available evidence. Dates are pretty unreliable, but time of day is generally good.

There is a general map of the area marking most of the trails, from which you can follow the descriptions of the walks. A word of warning, although the trails are generally well maintained, there are portions which are either off-trail (on Horse Ridge) or difficult to follow on bare rock (North Rim Walk above El Cap.) It can also be hot and dry in summer: be careful drinking out of the creeks, carry sterilizing tablets. I'd say you need to be a moderately experinced walker to do these walks. The walks are as follows:

1. North Rim Walk.

2. South Rim Walk.

3. Clouds Rest Walk.

4. Horse Ridge Walk.

In the springtime the wild flowers create color everywhere in the Park, but the Tioga road on the way up to Tuolumne meadows is particularly worth seeing. In many places there are extensive meadows by the roadside (often wet in spring) and the road itself is lined with flowers, especially where there are limestone outcrops by the side of the road. Spring doesn't last very long, and its timing can be very dependent upon local weather conditions. the best bet is to to try in the firat two weeks of June. There are photos of the flowers by the Tioga road from number 45 onwards.

The photoalbum is arranged in three layers: when you click on the [slideshow] link below, you start at the first layer, and get the first page of 16 thumbnail pictures (Slides). On these pages there are VCR-like controls which allow you to move on t other pages of thumbnails (First, Previous, Next and Last). Currently there are four pages of thumbnails, but the last has only a few, awaiting more photos.

If you click on one of the thumbnail photos, you move to the second layer and get an information page about the photo and a repeat of the thumbnail you clicked on. The purpose of this page is to describe the action - who is there, what is going on etc. None of this information has been entered at the present time. Also on the information page is a small table for identification and indexing information. Again there is little information entered other than the filename of the picture and its location on Jacqui's Mac.

Finally, if you click on the thumbnail picture on the information page, you move to the third layer and get an enlarged (roughly screen-sized) copy of the photo. This is what it's all about.

On both the information pages and the large photo pages you can cycle through the pictures using VCR-like controls (First, Previous, Next and Last), and also choose to reurn to one of the previous layers(Info or Slide) or this introductory page. This makes it easier to skip all the junk and just look at the pictures.

To the best of my knowledge, all the links are working, and you shouldn't get any errors such as 'Page not found on this server'. If a photo comes up blank, then it doesn't exist. If you do find any links that are completely broken, or lead to strange results, please let me know by email so I can put things right.
